Learn Class 3 English - Nouns and Pronouns

What are Nouns?

Nouns are the words that names people, place, animal and things. Around us we see so many things. Everything that we see has some name. Example: computer, blackboard, chalk, book, teacher etc.

Common Noun

Common nouns are the general or generic name of person, place, animal and things. Example: tree, man, mountain, box etc. Common noun is only capitalized if it is part of a title or it is used in the beginning of sentence.

Proper Noun

Proper nouns are the specific or particular name of person, place, animal and things. Example: Dia, Mt. Everest, Delhi etc. Proper noun is always capitalized.

What are Pronouns?

Pronouns take the place of nouns.

We can replace "Jasmine" with pronouns like this:

Jasmine wanted ice cream so she went to the store. She was having a birthday party.

Pronouns help us tell better stories!

The most common pronoun is it.

You can use it to replace things.

Pick the ball up = Pick it up

Personal Pronouns

Personal pronouns replace names of people.

Here are some personal pronouns:

  • She - Example: Andrea is funny. = She is funny.
  • He - Example: Brad was on time. = He was on time.
  • They - Example: The kids went to the zoo. = They went to the zoo.
  • We - Example: My family ate dinner. = We ate dinner.

Use the pronouns he, she, or it to take the place of one person or thing in the subject of a sentence.

example: Sally was happy. She won the prize.

Use the pronoun they to take the place of more than one person or thing in the subject of a sentence.

Example: Sally and Ben watched a show. They couldn't stop laughing.

Dan has a new bike. Dan rode the bike to school. Then Dan rode the bike to the park.

will replace to - Dan has a new bike. He rode it to school. Then he rode it to the park.

Tip: We don't replace the first "Dan" so that we can tell what the other pronouns are talking about.

What else is replaced? Bike!

Now, we have two pronouns! He and it.
