The things in the world are of two categories depending on their characteristics.

  • Living things
  • Non-living things

Living things

The things in our world that are alive are live things, and all living things are made up of cells. A few examples of living things include human beings, birds, animals, etc.

Some traits of living things are as follows.

  • Living things reproduce and undergo evolution.
  • They undergo waste excretion.
  • They respire, grow and move on their own.
  • They require nutrition to gain energy and to survive.
  • They can respond to their surrounding environment and adapt to their living surroundings.
  • Living things depend on other things like food, water, and air for their survival.
  • They can sense things happening around them.

Non-living things

The things that are not alive are known as non-living things. A few examples of non-living things include chairs, tables, laptops, etc.

Some traits of the non-living things are as follows.

  • Do not reproduce or grow.
  • The non-living things cannot sense things around them.
  • They do not have any lifespan or depend on other things for their survival.
  • They do not undergo any metabolic changes.
  • No evolution takes place among non-living things.
