Learn Class 1 Math - Subtraction

Basic Subtraction

When we remove something from a group of things then the process is known as subtraction or deduction. We use minus(-) sign for subtraction.

Example 1:There are 5 stars and if we remove 2 stars from the group of stars, then 3 stars will remain.

Example 2:Subtract 3 from 7
7 - 3 = 4

Example 3:Subtract 4 from 9
9 - 4 = 5

Subtracting Zero

When you subtract zero from any number, then the answer would be same number.

Example:7 - 0 = 7

Subtracting a Number from Itself

When we subtract a number from itself, the answer will always be zero.

Example:8 - 8 = 0

Story Subtraction

Example 1:There are 9 birds on a tree. If 5 birds fly away, then how many are left on the tree?

Number of birds on a tree = 9

Number of birds fly away = 5

So, Number of birds left on tree 9 - 5 = 4

Example 2:There are 12 people on a van. If 2 people got down, then how many people remain in the van?

Number of people on a van = 12

Number of people get down = 2

So, Number of people remain on van 12 - 2 = 10
