Learn Class 1 English - Articles

An Article is a word that is explicitly used to refine a noun. For example, it is used in place, person, object etc. Thus, if you see, the article is considered an adjective. So, it is a word that modifies the noun.

In general, the adjective tends to modify the noun via description. However, Articles are used to point out the noun.

Table of Articles

Number Indefinite Definite
Singular a / an the
Plural nothing the
Uncountable nothing the

We use various articles in writing and conversation to point out or refer to a noun or group of nouns: Definite and Indefinite articles.

Definite Article

Let's clear out the Definite article first. This article is the word 'the,' and it leads straight to a particular noun or group of nouns.

For example:
  • the pigmentations on my face
  • the turtle in the pool
  • the breakfast on my plate

Each noun or group of nouns being referred to - pigmentations, turtle, and breakfast - is direct and specific.

Indefinite Articles

Indefinite articles are' a' and 'an.' Each of these articles belongs to a noun. However, the noun connected to is not a particular person, place, thing, or concept. Instead, it can be any noun from a group of nouns.

For example:
  • a BMW from the car block
  • an incident in past

In any case, the noun is not precise. The BMW could be any BMW car ready for investment, and the incident could be an incident in the past.
