Learn Class 4 English - Conjunctions and Contractions

Conjunctions refer to a word that helps connect the clauses, words, and sentences. It is also known as a 'linker.'

Conjunctions

Conjunction Examples:

  • Ram is honest and kind.
  • Radha trusts her because she speaks the truth.
  • Krish is poor but honest.

List of conjunctions:

And As
But Now
Or Till
Because Whenever
This Wherever
That Until
As if Whereas
Lest Which
After Why
Before While
If only Then
Unless Provided that

Kinds of conjunctions:

1. Coordinating conjunction:

Like: And, But, For, Nor, So, Yet.

2. Subordinating Conjunction:

Like: After, how, when, then, as much as, until, before, since, what.

3. Correlative Conjunction:

Like: Not only-But also, Either-Or, Neither-Nor, Both-And, Not-But.

Contractions:

The word, which is a combination of two words, is 'Contraction.' And such words get combined with the help of an apostrophe.

Like: is not- isn't, will not- want, do not- don't, he will- he'll, we would- we'd, it has- it's, and many more.

One can say that the contractions replace the words of the second letter. LIKE: does not- doesn't.

Here, in the word ''doesn't'', the word 'o' gets replaced with an 'apostrophe.' That means it is taking the place of 'o' in the word "doesn't."
